HEPATITIS C infection in the US. According to the American Association for the Study of Liver Disease (AASLD) Conference, November 11, 2005, been infected with HCV is approximately five million. Of these, approximately 3.4 million are currently infected.

The incidence of complications of long-standing untreated chronic Hepatitis C, including cirrhosis, liver failure and liver cancer are expected to increase by 60–200 percent by the end of the current decade.

Direct and indirect medical care costs associated with disability, lost productivity, and premature death are expected to exceed $85 billion by the year 2019.

For most of those who have developed decompensated cirrhosis, liver transplantation is their only means of survival. Currently, HCV is the primary reason for liver transplantation. According to the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network, nearlydonor livers became available in 2004 for transplantation. continuing advances in medicine and technology, the demand for organs is vastly greater than the number of organ donors.

The AASLD estimates 240,000 children in the United States have antibodies for Hepatitis C.12,000 Hepatitis C related deaths yearly in the US, and these figures may underestimates.
